PREREQUISITE: Beginning Spanish I

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a continuation of Spanish 1311, and it covers the fundamental skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing, including basic vocabulary, grammatical structures, and culture. Prerequisite: SPAN 1311.

Please note: Students may take SPAN 1311/1312 or SPAN 1411/1412 for credit, but students may take both sequences for credit, but may not take both sequences for credit.)

2.  Write effective sentences in Spanish.

3.  Write effective paragraphs in Spanish.

4.  Translate English sentences into Spanish.

6.  Read Spanish passages and summarize in English.

REQUIRED RESOURCES:

  1. Text: VISTAS: INTRODUCCION A LA LENGUA ESPAÑOLA. Blanco, José A. & Donley, Philip Redwine. Third Edition (Hardback Text) and Passcode: VISTAS, Third Edition Supersite Student Passcode (code bound into textbook) You can buy them at the TSTC bookstore or buy them directly from the publisher at www.vhldirect.com ISBN 978-1-60007-125-6.
  2. A good Spanish/English dictionary.
  3. 1 plain pocket folder with brads (3 holed) to keep all the journals.
  4. Losse-leaf notebook/Notebook.
  5. All students must have access to a microphone and headphone set. Spanish 1312 is enhanced through the use of Moodle. Students must set up a student account on Moodle http://moodle.harlingen.tstc.edu . Use your WebAdvisor login and password.

You will need the Supersite Passcode that comes bound into the textbook. The first day of class the instructor will give you in class the instructions that you need to start using the Vistas Supersite. Once you have passcode and the instructions, you can create an account at the following website: http://vistas.vhlcentral.com (This information will available at Moodle too)

 

Technical Skills and Equipment Requirements:

  • All students must have access to a microphone and headphone set.
  • Students must have internet access. A high speed connection, either DSL, T1, LAN or Cable, is recommended for optimal use.
  • A Java enabled browser, the latest version of Firefox (preferred for Moodle), or Internet Explorer.
  • Remember to enable pop-ups in your browser in order for Moodle to work appropriately.
  • The language lab located in Building W-124 has the equipment necessary for students to complete the electronic assignments; you just need to take your TSTC ID with you.

Assignments from this course are subject to being archived for general education assessment. Procedures will follow protocols as prescribed by the research guidelines of the Association for Institutional Research.

Attendance Policy:

Students are responsible for their own class attendance and participation. Faculty members may establish requirements for student participation in specific learning activities both in and out of the classroom and may consider these requirements when determining final grades.

Classroom Conduct:

TSTC expects all students to engage in scholastic pursuits in a manner that is beyond reproach. Students are expected to maintain complete honesty and integrity. Any student found guilty of scholastic dishonesty is subject to disciplinary action. Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on academic work, plagiarism, and collusion.

 

  • Cheating on academic work includes, but is not limited to:
  • Copying from another student’s test paper or other academic work; using materials during a test that have not been authorized by the individual giving the test; collaborating with another student, without authorization, during an examination or in preparing academic work; bribing another person to obtain an unadministered test; knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, transporting, or soliciting, in whole or in part, the contents of an unadministered test; and substituting for another student, or permitting another student to substitute for oneself, to take a test or prepare other academic work.
  • Plagiarism means claiming another’s work as one’s own without acknowledging its origin and doing so for credit.
  • Collusion means unauthorized collaboration with another person in preparing a written work offered for credit.

All students are expected to help to maintain a classroom environment that is conducive to learning. To ensure that all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class, students are prohibited from engaging in any form of disruptive behavior (cellular phones, eating or drinking in the classroom, arriving late to class, leaving the lecture early, making offensive remarks, missing deadlines, prolonged chattering, reading newspapers or doing other work in class, sleeping, talking out of turn, shuffling notebooks, overt inattentiveness, etc). Inappropriate behavior in the classroom may result, minimally, in a request to leave class.

If you missed class you are responsible to inform your instructor immediately and show the proper documentation to excuse your absence. Contact your classmates to know what was covered in class and the information you missed. If an assignment is due when you missed class you are still responsible to turn it in on time. Please see the Tentative Calendar to plan class work ahead. Technical problems are not an excused for not submitting your work on time.

NOTES ABOUT EVALUATION:

PARTICIPATION: 30 %

PARTICIPATION 10 %

Students are expected to be present at all class meetings and come prepared by reading the textbook material. If you are late or you leave early from class, points will be deducted on your participation grade. If student is not present for roll call, he/she will be considered late. Two tardies constitute one absence. Exceptions must be approved by the instructor at the beginning of the semester. If you are an athlete or participate in any school sponsored activity, please inform the instructor.

JOURNALS 10%

Students will write about their personal experiences dealing with the subjects related to the course lessons. The student will prepare a one-page type written paper. This paper should be double spaced, using Times New Roman, and Font 12. Assignments are due at the beginning of class period. No work will be received later than this time.

QUIZZES 10 %  No make up quizzes will be given without.  See Calendar

HOMEWORK 10 %

For online homework assignments students will be allowed up to two attempts. Your final score for an assignment will be based on your highest score attempt. Assignments are due on the day indicated (before midnight). (See calendar, so you can plan ahead). Written assignments must be type written, using font 12, Times New Roman, and double spaced.

EXAMS 60 %

EXAMS 40 %

Each exam will cover the following sections: listening, vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, and culture. No make up exam will be given.

ORAL PRESENTATION 20%

Students will prepare an oral presentation individually. The topic should be approved by the instructor.  The presentation is a four-step process that includes explaining your topic selection, an outline with sources, a summary of the topic and an analysis about what you learned form your research, and the oral presentation from 5 minutes to 7 minutes max.  See Calendar for due dates and Moodle for more details.
