Intergrating Quotations

The first time that you quote a source, include all pertinent information.  You must use MLA parenthetical documentation for ALL FACTS AND/OR QUOTATIONS.  (Reread the preceding sentence!!!)  Establish credibility of the source/writer by including his/her full name and the tiltle of the article/book the first time you reference that source.  Each quotation should be set up for a smooth transition.  Never have a quotation just "dangling" by itself.  here is an example of a quotation and its reference, followed by the different ways the same quotation can be incorporated into text:

Source:     Myths

Author:     Alexander Eliot

Quote:     "In the language of symbolism, the sun's energy is considered a male force, and its element is gold."

Page:     95

1.  Example of author's name and book title incorporated in sentence.  If you use the author's name in the sentence, then you only need to include the page number in the parenthetical citation.

a.  In Myths, Alexamder Eliot states, "In the language of symbolism, the sun's energy is considered a male force, and its element is gold" (95).

b.  Alexander Eliot, author of Myths, states, "In the language of symbolism, the sun's energy is considered a male force, and its element is gold" (95).

2.  Once the author's credentials are established, you only refer to the last name.  If you use the author's name in the sentence, then you only need to include the page number in the parenthetical citation.

a.  According to Eliot, the sun is "consiedered a male force" in many cultures (95).

b.  Eliot says that the sun is "considered a male force" in many cultures (95).

c.  Eliot states, "the sun's energy is considered a male male force" (95).

3.  If you do not use the author's name in the sentence, you must include the author's name in your parenthetical documentation:

a. In many cultures, the sun is "considered a male force, " and it is associatied with the element of gold (Eliot 95).

4.  Even when you do not use a direct quote, DOCUMENT ALL FACTS.  If you do not, the information is useless, and you hae not demonstrated any reserach skills.

a.  In many cultures, the sun is considered male and the moon is female (Eliot 95).

b.  Gold is associated with the sun, and silver is associated with the moon (Eliot 95).
