Learning Outcomes & Performance Objectives

Learning Outcome 1: You will recognize the importance of specifying and analyzing audience and purpose in order to make appropriate rhetorical choices and will be able to produce clear and coherent prose as adapted to purpose, audience and occasion by applying the principles of writing as a process, which includes pre-writing and invention, writing, revising, proofreading, and editing.

Performance Objective and Measurement: You will generate four unit mini-portfolios which include five writing assignments that show awareness of writing as a process including awareness of audience, purpose, style, format, and accepted conventions of standard written English. Measurements are: five essays.

Learning Outcome 2: You will read for a variety of purposes, analyze a variety of technical texts written for various rhetorical purposes and audiences, evaluate a variety of texts as ethically responsible and rhetorically effective, and apply basic principles of critical thinking in analyzing non-fiction prose.

Performance Objective and Measurement: You will demonstrate understanding of the materials through discussions, collaborative activities, and essays. Portfolio pages indicate the percentages of each assignment. Discussions and collaborative activities.

Learning Outcome 3: You will acquire appropriate primary and secondary sources information, understand research as inquiry and integral to one's writing processes, demonstrate the ability to access credible sources through research, evaluate appropriate primary and secondary sources in terms of credibility, context, author, purpose and audienc and incorporate research and documentation into written assignments that reflect critical thinking skills.

Performance Objective and Measurement: You will incorporate appropriate source materials into discussion and essays and demonstrate mastery in the APA documentation method. This will be measured in each portfolio and in discussions.

Learning Outcome 4: The student will be able to achieve competency in applying appropriate modes of organization, including paragraph development, introductions, and conclusions, in the development of technical texts and develop a vocabulary and context-specific criteria for assessing their own writing and their peers’

Performance Objective and Measurement: In essays and completed portfolios, you will demonstrate organizational mastery as part of the minimum five essays described in Learning Outcome 1 as well as a final essay of at least 500 words which will account for part of the final grade.

Learning Outcome 5: You will demonstrate competency in edited standard written American English to include the conventions of grammar and spelling.

Performance Objective and Measurement: You will demonstrate competency as part of the minimum five essays described in Learning Outcome 1 as well as a final essay of at least 500 words.

Learning Outcome 6: You will use technology to collaborate and interact with peers and instructors for various purposes through discussions, peer critique, interchanges, on-line exchanges, workshops, and conferences; use computer technology to generate texts, discuss readings, communicate across disciplinary contexts, and solve problems; and understand the limits, problems, and possibilities connected with computer technology.

Performance Objective and Measurement: You will demonstrate competency as part of the ongoing interaction needed to complete course requirements.
