COURSE (CATALOG) DESCRIPTION
Principles and techniques of written composition, textual analysis, and critical thinking. Prerequisite: READ 200 & WRIT 200 or equivalent or as determined by English placement test.

Steps to Writing Well with Additional Readings 6th ed. Ed. Jean wyrick. Thomson, 2005. (ISBN# 01413001092)
Access to internet, email account, pen drive, and colored pocket folders (to aide the instructor, each class section will have a certain colored folder in which to submit work).

Assignments from this course are subject to being archived for general education assessment. Procedures will follow protocols as prescribed by the research guidelines of the Association for Institutional Research.
Course purpose and scope:
E1301 introduces studetents to critical thinking, close, analytical, college-level reading of narravtives, arguments, and expository prose and to the writing of expository and argumentative prose in response to that reading. Additionally, students will master the most basic methods of library research. Since it provides tools without which nobody can hope to succeed in college livel studies, one could argue E1301 is one of the most important courses you will take in college
Course Work
Students will read essays and other works, discuss what they have read, and then write in response to the readings and discussion.
Graded work will include but not be limited to:
- Reading quizzes, exercises, and summaries of assigned readings.
- 5 essays, all of which will require research and documentation.
- A 5-6 page research paper drawn on at least 5 outside sources properly documented in MLA style format.
- A 10 entry annotated bibliography -- (specifics to be discussed).
- A final exam essay written in class.
Other work will include but not be limited to: ungraded but required written responses to readings and class discussions and ungrade but required editing exercises.

Students will be required to submit work via email, so a working knowledge of document transmittal is essential. All written work must be word processor generated following the MLA format unless specified otherwise. This important issue will be discussed at length in class.
Portfolio
During the semester, all work will be compiled into a portfolio representative of the total effort put forward during the semester, this will include mandatory revisions and rewrites of all papers as well as copies of those sources cited in the essays. At the end of the semester, the instructor will evaluate this portfolio before assigning the finalcourse grade; this comprehensive evaluation cannot lower the final grade but can surely raise it. The student is responsible to present the complete portfolio, including original work plus revised work. Failure to submit the complete portfolio, regardless of the reason, will make it impossible for instructor to assign a grade for the course. Student must accept responsibility for copies of all work in the event of lost work regardless of who lost it. We will discuss this at length inclass, so pay attention and ask questions. I encourage you to come to my office if youhave questions regarding your progress.
Attendance:
During class, the instructor will give direction and other information necessary to the completion of assigned work; additionally, class discussion will provide needed information. Those absent will not be able to follow instructions they do not hear nor will they have the benefit of class discussion in which they do not participate. Please do not come and ask me "did I miss anything?' Of course you missed everything that happened the day you were absent. I cannot and will not attempt to
Classroom behavior policy
I will treat everyone the way I hope to be treated, and I expect everyone else to do the same. We owe it to each other to arrive for class prepared and on time; tardiness disrupts and offends. Talking in class when the instructor or fellow students hold the floor will result in removal from the class.
Changes in corse guide and course schedule
The inevitable changes in this course guide and in the course schedule will be announced in class and usually given in writing. Students are responsible for being in class and for keeping up with any changes. Absence when changes are announced does not relieve the student of that responisbility.
